Solano County Community Investment Fund Awards Crescent Moon Center $25,000

6 Solano County organizations were awarded Community Investment Fund grants totaling $341,237. There were 20 eligible proposals submitted for these grants, each meeting at least one of the top-six needs in the county: mental health, homelessness, housing, early education, youth development or safe and stable environments for children.

Out of the 6 projects selected, Supervisor Monica Brown (part of the review group) specifically referenced Crescent Moon Center's award of $25,000 to provide arts, mindfulness and equine-assisted mental health workshops to 300 individuals, supporting recovery and community connection.

“We are immensely grateful for Solano County's support in recognition of the critical need to make mental health recovery services accessible to all” said Karen Kahn, Founder, President, & Executive Director of Crescent Moon Center. "This grant will ensure Solano County residents can receive mental health support through our innovative holistic wellness program.”

According to a 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment for Solano County by NorthBay Health, “...rates of both suicide deaths and deaths of despair are higher than state averages.” The report also reveals that just 56% of Solano County adults who sought treatment for self-identified mental/emotional or alcohol/drug issues received help.

Unlike most traditional mental health treatment programs, CMC addresses mental health challenges through unique experiential arts and mindfulness programs, along with guided interactions with horses - positioning Solano County at the forefront of innovative mental health, trauma, and addiction recovery.

CMC’s primary programs are conducted at Rush Ranch, nestled in a 2,070-acre nature preserve in Suisun City. With support from Solano County, our Community Partners Program will expand our services further into Fairfield, Vallejo, and Vacaville, targeting shelters, transitional housing programs, and addiction treatment centers, to offer customized on and off-site workshops. The majority of participants receive scholarships, and workshops are offered at no-cost to community partners.

CMC has a track record of delivering powerful results. Participants have described the program as “transformative” and “life-changing.” In a recent post-workshop survey of 15 participants with our Fairfield partner, Archway Recovery Services, 75% reported that our workshop helped with “having specific goals for my health and well-being this year,” and 100% reported “feeling more grounded and connected to myself.”

We believe that mental health and addiction recovery support should not be a privilege but a right, and we actively work to eliminate systemic barriers.
