Our Science-Based Approach

ree

Humans have partnered with horses and expressed themselves through art across cultures and time. Throughout the 20th century, practices integrating horses and art into therapeutic settings evolved into what are now cutting-edge approaches for improving mental health and catalyzing personal growth. Grounded in experiential hands-on activities, these approaches nurture emotional regulation, foster a sense of well-being, and build self-awareness, offering pathways to wellness, recovery, and resilience.

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) and Expressive Arts are now recognized as science-based tools for healing. Research in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral therapy supports their potential to reduce stress, promote positive changes in brain function, enhance communication skills, and improve overall mental health. Studies continue to show the effectiveness of these methods, making them increasingly integral to holistic wellness practices.

Crescent Moon Center offers equine-assisted learning and expressive arts workshops to adults (18+) who are in recovery from, or at risk for, alcohol and drug dependency, and those facing life challenges due to stress, trauma, and disability. Workshops range from a comprehensive six-day program to single or two-day workshops that include equine-assisted learning, poetic medicine (creative writing), abstract painting, photography, collaborative mural-making, vision-boarding, hiking, and therapeutic carriage riding. Through innovative and hands-on approaches, Crescent Moon is helping participants find balance and emotional well-being by combining the powerful healing tools of horses and art.

“I learned so much from the horses. That was one of the most powerful experiences of my life,” shared one participantin Crescent Moon Center’s program ‘Healing Reflections.’
